Gluehwein - Hot German Mulled Wine

German Gluehwein

From Germany
To endure a cold or wet winter day, there is nothing better than a hot steaming gluehwein made with spiced red wine and brandy. It will warm your heart and everything else as well - cold feet be gone!

Select a good red wine and heat it just up to the point before it starts boiling. This German winter favorite is sure to please everyone after a day out in the cold.

Enjoy it with discretion, as the hot alcohol packs quite a punch!

Serves: 6 / Ready in: 30 minutes
Great for: gluten-free, vegan

  • 1 bottle dry red wine (zinfandel, merlot, burgundy, cabernet sauvignon, etc.)
  • 1/2 lemon squeezed
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 12 cloves, whole
  • 1/2 teaspoon mace

  1. Pour the wine into a large pot and begin heating over low heat. As it begins to warm, add lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and mace. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Heat thoroughly but do not allow to boil! Add the lemon slices. Steep for another 10-15 minutes over low heat.
  2. You can add more sugar if you like it sweeter. Stir well so that it dissolves. Serve hot in a heat resistant glass - and feel your cold toes come back to life!
