Kimball Lake Rescue

by Christina M. Cox
(White Cloud, Michigan)

Standing at the edge of Kimball Lake my heart began to race with nervous excitement. We were about to embark on a dangerous mission.

Earlier this morning my husband and I had received a call from a friend of mine that was a wildlife rehabilitator associate. A pack of coyotes had forced a deer onto the frozen lake the previous evening and needed rescuing. Unable to join us she was sending over her husband Dan and son Tim to assist us.

Equipped with only a sled and a blanket we began our adventure. The lake protested our ascent moaning all the way, as we creaked across her slippery surface. The resounding noise foreshadowed our every move alerting the deer of our impending approach. We had to proceed rapidly before she broke her legs trying to frantically escape.

Tim, with his youthfulness, sprang into action pounced on her like a cougar pinning her to the lake, which allowed us to grab her legs, and lift her onto the sled. We quickly covered her over with a blanket to soothe her. As we caught our breath, the reality of the looming danger sunk in. The shore was way off in the distance and we had to try to restrict a large frightened doe with hoofs that could easily slash through our winter attire.

Tim slowly pulled the sled as we restrained the deer. Suddenly a strong gust of wind blew back the blanket exposing the does face. Instantaneously she bounded up escaping our grasp. Our only defense at this point was to throw the blanket over her and force her back down on the sled.

The last trek of our adventure was an exhausting struggle for all of us. When we unveiled the deer, she sauntered off glancing back as if to say thank you. I am grateful God oversaw our every move, providing us with the strength necessary to succeed in our mighty task!
