No Road Kill Tonight

by Lakshmi

Raccoons are frequent road kill victims

Raccoons are frequent road kill victims

I remember one night driving down the street with my boyfriend many years ago. I have a soft spot for animals trying to cross the road and absolutely dislike seeing them get hit.

A car in front of us hit a raccoon. It was horrible and I asked my boyfriend to stop and investigate. There was no damage, the raccoon was just stunned, but if that raccoon stayed where he was, he would be run over again for sure.

This was a wild animal and a raccoon, which many people regard as a pest and would be glad to see him die.

I wanted to carry him to the side of the road at least. I didn't want to get bitten, so we wrapped up the raccoon in an old pair of jeans and I carried him to the sidewalk, away from traffic (I had to do it all, as my boyfriend didn't want to touch him).

We went for coffee and I looked up the phone number of animal control in the area, who could care for him if he was injured.

To our great surprise and joy, when we passed by that part of the street again, the raccoon was gone!

I felt relieved. The raccoon was alive and safe.

At least for that night - he did not become road kill!
