Turtle Rescue On Busy Street

by Ina
(Orlando, Florida)

Turtles often walk across the road in search of water

Turtles often walk across the road in search of water

I was lucky enough to perform several animal rescues where the critters had to be saved from oncoming traffic or the claws of my cats - but this turtle rescue is one of my favorites.

I was driving down International Drive in Orlando - a very busy main street that is buzzing all day and night with tourist and convention visitor traffic.

All of a sudden I saw a turtle on the curbside of the road, eagerly trying to cross the busy traffic lane. I took the next turn and parked the car, then walked back to where I saw the turtle and, luckily, just arrived before he started off across the road again - which sure would have been his last attempt.

I gently picked up the turtle with my index fingers and thumbs - just to drop it again instantly, as the frightened critter wriggled himself out of my hold and fell back on the road. Now time was of the essence before the traffic light would switch again and make the turtle rescue dangerous for both of us. So I grabbed him more determinedly, right under his shell, between the struggling legs. That way I was also able to avoid bites from his flipping head, as the frantic turtle tried to snap at my fingers in his quest for freedom.

I walked the turtle over to the green area right beside my car and got a box out of the trunk, which I carried around for office supplies at that time. Placing him safely into the box along with some grass to nibble on, I walked a few yards over to what looked like a small pond insde that park. There I released the turtle, who took off rapidly (figuratively speaking) towards the lake.

I would like to think that my action rescued the little fellow from a sure road kill that day - and hopefully he stays clear of the road for a while!

Turtle Rescue
by: Amanda Matthew

I also have a animal rescue story of my childhood. Once I went to my uncle's house, near his house is a park with a beautiful lake. When I came out for going back home, I saw various baby turtles walking on the busy road in front of house. I called my uncle and we started collecting them in a box. Then we returned them back to park authority. It felt the same you are feeling, happiness. Its good to do something good like custom essay writing to improve our writing skills. I like healthy eating guidelines.

Turtle speed won't make for good survival chances
by: Ina

You are right Muk - really lucky that the fellow made it out alive. At his speed one would have to stop traffic for 30 minutes to have him cross the road... Unfortunately this is rather common in Florida. when I lived there we had a few such rescues.

Turtle rescue @ its best
by: Muk

I like the story of the turtle rescue! I can imagine the poor little turtle confused on the street with cars whizzing by and lo and behold a 'rescue operation'... Mr. Turtle must be happily swimming in the pond now.

Fabulous to read the rescue story!
